Stunning footage of marine life

Kayaker and GoPro enthusiast Nathan Pettigrew has released another compilation of some of the best moments he's recorded over the last six months or so.

Tauranga Moana is Awesome II is a collection of clips he's managed to film thanks to his a marine mammal permit, which allows him to get up close to marine wildlife.

In a post to Facebook, he describes watching animal documentaries on television when he was younger.

'Sadly, some of the animals that I saw on those TV shows have since disappeared or face extinction and little did I know at the time that New Zealand had almost lost its entire Southern Right whale population during the days of whaling which saw the numbers dwindle from around 40,000 to just over 100.”

He says thankfully, times have changed, and numbers within certain species are slowly recovering. It's up to New Zealanders to do their bit to help, however.

'Just like us, they need their rest as well as time to feed, and something as simple as boat noise can affect those crucial moments."

He hopes the video will inspire younger generations to develop a love of nature, and to care about the environment.

'If we all simply do 'our bit' in conservation, we will see bigger numbers of these spectacular animals that call New Zealand 'home'.”
