Forty hearty competitors pushed their bodies to the limit during SPEE Training's One kilometre Burpee Challenge in Mount Maunganui.

Starting from the Mount Maunganui Surf Club the competitors, some in teams and others as individuals, burpee'd 500 metres down to Moturiki / Leisure Island, before turning around and heading back up the beach.

Taking the title this morning were the Argent Family, a team of four, who completed the challenge in 44 minutes, while SPEE Training co-owners Reece and Vanita Spee weren't too far behind and finished in 45 minutes.

Speaking to SunLive earlier this week, Vanita says along with offering fitness fanatics a gruelling challenging to test their mettle, money raised from registrations and donations will go towards charities dealing with domestic violence and youth homelessness.

'Burpees are one of those things people don't like, and a kilometre of burpees is even more daunting.”

According to Vanita, a kilometre roughly equates to 750 burpees – a physical exercise consisting of a squat thrust made from and ending in a standing position – for one person.
