The community is being invited to share their thoughts about the future development of Tauriko West at several information days taking place this Friday and Saturday.

The Tauriko for Tomorrow project being undertaken by SmartGrowth partners Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Tauranga City Council, and the New Zealand Transport Agency, aims to develop a new area of urban growth in the Bay of Plenty.

'We are at the early stages of planning for Tauriko for Tomorrow, and we want to work closely with the community to ensure the vision we're creating is a shared one,” says Tauranga Mayor Greg Brownless.

'We want to understand what is important for the people who live, work and travel through the area: what it is they most value, what they would like to see protected and preserved, and what they would like to change.

Greg says the objective of the project is to create a thriving community in Tauriko West and provide access to amenities like schooling, parks and walkways, the Wairoa River, shopping at nearby areas, and transport and infrastructure options.

As Tauranga and the western Bay of Plenty continue to experience strong population growth, more land is needed for housing.

Tauriko West is one of seven urban projects that will deliver new housing capacity over the next ten years as part of the long-term SmartGrowth Strategy to cater for growth.

But there are many pieces of the puzzle that need to come together before any urban development begins, adds Greg.

'At the Tauriko for Tomorrow information days the community will be able to find out about the proposed programme for State Highway 29, the proposed boundary changes, urban limits and structure plan processes.

'We welcome everyone to come along, learn more about the proposed plans, and help us create the vision of Tauriko for Tomorrow.”

The Tauriko for Tomorrow information days will take place at Shop 9, Tauranga Crossing, Tauriko, on Friday and Saturday, May 26-27, from 11am until 3pm.

Are the Councils finally allowing Bob Clarkson to develop his land? if this is not his property there is no reason now why councils don't let him go ahead with his plans!

Interesting question, so I looked it up : It was formed to mill the bush between Omanawa and Oropi. (Tauriko as we know it now was in between that area.) ... They decided to change the 'co' to 'ko' which makes Tauriko, and that's what we know it as now! The name is a contraction. Tau from Tauranga, Ri from Rimu and Ko/Co From Company.
