Police and fire scene investigators are investigating a suspicious blaze which destroyed a caravan in Rotorua on Thursday.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says three appliances from the Rotorua Station were dispatch to what was initially believed to be a building fire in Owhata at 4.40pm.

'The caravan, which measured 5m x 5m and was located in the middle of a paddock, was well involved in fire when crews arrived. All persons were accounted for.

'The fire investigator was called in to try and figure out what caused the blaze as it was considered suspicious.”

Megan says after the fire was extinguished the scene was left in the hands of the fire investigator and police.

A witness at the scene who provided SunLive with a video of the blaze says trees in the vicinity of caravan also caught fire as a result of the incident.

'There was an explosion that could have been a gas bottle that sent flames higher than the trees.”
