A new exhibition is opening at The Incubator tonight, as part of the city's Matariki celebrations.

‘A Noble Savage' is an exhibition by emerging artist Iata Peautolu, who is the first beneficiary of an emerging artist programme sponsored by the Tauranga City Council Community match fund.

The Incubator director Simone Anderson says this is a valuable opportunity for talented emerging artists to hold a curated, mentored first solo exhibition, an often ‘unachievable and intimidating experience'.

'Holding a solo show is an integral stepping stone for an artist to progress as a recognised professional and gives validity to their practice,” she says.

'Without opportunities like this some artists hide away, lacking confidence and direction, so the talent is never brought to light. This work demonstrates exceptional talent, and clearly Iata has a very bright future ahead of him as an exhibiting artist.”

Iata says his artwork explores and revisits his cultural heritage and upbringing.

'There are elements of Maori and Niuean imagery, and at times there is an integration of both, which is a true representation of my identity. Polynesians are very similar to each other and we all share common values and beliefs. Whilst there is a perception of the pacific islands being havens of paradise, we also have a very savage and barbaric history.”

The evening begins at 6pm sharp at The Incubator in the Historic Village, with a karakia and taonga puoro by Jo'el Komene, followed by a waiata from award-winning Tauria Mai Tawhiti.

The exhibition will run from May 26 to June 15, with the gallery open 9am-3pm weekdays and on Sunday June 4 from 8am-1pm during the Lions market.
