A missing kayaker rescued from the waters near Thames is being deemed a 'lucky guy” after his kayak capsized.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked to Te Mata around 10pm, to search for a man who was overdue from a kayak fishing trip.

The Coastguard also assisted in the search.

'The crew conducted an extensive search of the area around Waikawau on the West Coast of the Coromandel and at around 10.40pm were advised that a person was attempting to get their attention from the shoreline,” says a spokesperson for the rescue chopper.

'The helicopter landed at Kereta and uplifted the man, in his 40s, who was the missing kayaker.”

His kayak had capsized at around 3pm and he had used his partially submerged kayak to swim/paddle to shore.

'Unfortunately his mobile phone had become waterlogged, despite being in a waterproof pouch. He was not wearing a wetsuit.

'On crew's arrival, the man was hypothermic, obviously distressed and extremely fatigued. A bystander had come across him and attempted to turn a torch on and off to get emergency services' attention.

The crew flew the patient to Thames Hospital in a moderate condition.

We sold our kayaks a few years ago. They are so unstable and dangerous. I capsized out of mine once and that was enough for me and my wife. Also I have a few friends that have done the same and sold theirs too. My wife is a teacher and one of the parents at her ex school drowned on Lake Rotorua and she was a very experienced kayaker with all the right safety equipment. We were glad to say good riddance to those two heaps of plastic junk.

Out of date

I think u are well out of touch with some modern kayaks comfortably numb - well designed and made kayaks are extremely stable and safe as attested by the numerous kayakers around the country - this guy could have been in an old tub in poor conditions and just been caught out - I note he did not have a vhf radio which is a big no no as easy to contact coastguard and alert to any issues earlier - there are risks to lots of stuff in life and your comments re kayaks are just laughable and so out of date

Self inflicted

There is obviously circumstances around how this incident may have occurred. Based on information in this article, it would appear the victim in this case was severely under prepared for his kayaking trip. A wetsuit this time of year particularly is a must. An EPIRB would certainly have helped and a hand held water proof VHF Radio would also been useful and there was no mention of a life jacket. Modern kayaks are very well equipped and stable. I used to have one. Incidents like this could have been avoided and risk to life would have greatly reduced if the victim was appropriately equipped. Hopefully this was a stern warning for him to be better equipped next time. More education needs to be implemented into boating a water recreation.
