Heavy rain and strong winds to lash Bay

Heavy rain is expected for the Bay of Plenty today and northeasterlies strengthening for a time.

It's a two-clothing layer day with a high of 17 and an overnight low of 14 degrees forecast.

A warning for heavy for rain is in place as heavy rain and strong winds are forecast.

The MetService says a low over the north Tasman Sea moves slowly southwards and should lie to the west of the upper North Island late Thursday.

"Its associated front is expected to move south over the northern half of the North Island during Thursday then across central New Zealand on Friday.

"This front is preceded by a strong moist northeasterly flow, and is expected to bring a period of northeast gales and rain to northern New Zealand."

The heaviest falls are likely in Westland south of the glaciers, and Bay of Plenty and northern Gisborne, where 80 to 110mm of rain may accumulate in a 15 to 18 hour period.

This morning's video was filmed on Mount Main beach and in Pilot Bay where we caught up with our resident oyster catchers locally known as Harry and Sophie going for a morning stroll in the shallows.
