Unsafe lane change causes huge delays

A lane on Takitimu Drive was blocked for a period of time last night after a truck collided with a car. Supplied photo.

An unsafe lane change caused a crash on Takitimu Drive last night, which in turn resulted in significant delays for motorists.

Police were alerted to the crash just before 5pm, which occurred around a 100 metres from the Elizabeth Street roundabout.

Acting Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Sergeant Wayne Hunter says a 47-year-old truck driver failed to see a car travelling in the lane next to him.

When he attempted to move into that lane, the crash occurred.

'The truck driver has now received a ticket for making an unsafe lane change.”

There were no injuries as a result of the crash, but motorists experienced significant delays due to the high volume of traffic being reduced to one lane until around 6pm.

My thoughts only, after driving for yrs,its hard to see cars along side of you, even with good mirrors, there is blind spots there, ask any trucker, this is terrible,in my opinion only, he should not have been given a ticket, imagine the STRESS already with this and his Boss and family,it was just a accident, for goodness sake, car was in the wrong place at the wrong time, these things do happen, the infringement should be waived, those TRUCK drivers do their best not to do this, gosh now a fine, this will put Stress on family to pay, these drivers work hard to make a crust and done a hard day and this happens, gosh i read lots of times that things like this happen everyday in nz,i feel for the(TRUCK) driver,i would be ticked off had this been me,in my words only, give this truck driver a break,No1 for News, Sunlive,Thankyou,10-4 out.

You say Car in wrong place at wrong time? Sure accidents happen, but to attempt sliding blame towards care driver is a bit rough. Simple if you can't see you don't move.

I often read your opinionated nonsense on this site. This time you have gone too far. This is a professional driver in charge of a truck on a dual lane carriageway. It is inexcusable that this should have happened. The fact that no-one was hurt is fantastic, but how easily that could have turned out differently. To say the car was in the wrong place at the wrong time is absurd. An infringement is exactly what should be issued that the truck driver feel lucky that and a bent car is all that happened.

Stress?

Imagine the stress on the person who's car is now no longer of use because it was crushed by a truck? How do they now get to work to make their "crust"?

Blind spots?

Posted on 28-06-2017 17:29 | By maildrop

No such thing. I was always told to turn my neck and look over my shoulder to double check. Or lean forward to alter the view in the mirror. Or get one of those double mirrors. Simple if you care about others. This is a rare occurrence in the UK but then again truck crashes in general are much less frequent there. There is something about NZ truck drivers........oh yeh, remembered, they're Kiwis. Worst drivers in the world.

Your comments are little short of pathetic. None of the points you make are valid. The truck driver is liable for his actions since he caused the incident. Given that all vehicles have blind spots, the onus is on the driver to hold back if he cannot clearly see traffic in the blind spots. There is absolutely no excuse for executing a move if he cannot see. Unfortunately for you your credibility has been shattered this time!

It would appear a logging truck is the cause of yet another crash!!!

A Law unto themselves

A lot of logging truck drivers tailgate you, drive over the speed limit and think they own the road. Glad this truck driver got ticketed and luckily no one was injured. Old truckers comments are just ridiculous.

Visibility.

The road code says lights on up to 1/2 hr? before sunrise and same after sunset? With falling light levels (weather also a factor) it can help to have lights on outside those times. It would help me if others have their lights on more than less. Thanks readers.
