Single change made to Annual Plan

Tauranga City Council has adopted the Annual Plan for 2017/18, with one change since deliberations.

Following a notice of motion, further discussions in council chambers this morning resulted in the council agreeing to provide up to $4 million funding towards a new Visitor Information Centre in Mount Maunganui.

This is consistent with the funding consulted on in the draft Annual Plan, which had been reduced to $2.5 million through deliberations.

The final Annual Plan provides increased capital and operational budget to provide for the city's fast-paced growth, which has increased from the Long Term Plan forecast of 1.7 per cent to 3.1 per cent for 2017/18.

The 2017/18 budget translates to a 3.8 per cent average rates increase and net debt at $442 million.

Tauranga's rapid population growth has resulted in an increase in required infrastructure investment in the last two years, and more resources have been required to service the demands of a growing population.

In this time of growth, the council will be investing more in the community, both through capital expenditure to build assets, and by supporting other organisations through grants for them to invest in assets for the community (e.g. Papamoa Surf Lifesaving Club, Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service and Bay Oval Trust).

Tauranga City Council also increased expenditure in key areas of service provision such as building services (which is offset by increased revenue), events and libraries as well as support for community organisations and groups.

Today the council also adopted the Development Contributions Policy and user fees and charges for 2017/18.

The full Annual Plan 2017/18, including a summary of key decisions made through consultation and deliberations, updated user fees and charges schedule, and Development Contributions Policy, will be made available on the council's website and in service centres in the coming week.

You cant be far away from sending us broke then we can have you all removed.I think its is gutless to roll over just because someone was upset that we didn't give them enough money to live their dream.Grow a set TCC and pull your collective heads in. I hope Larry is happy because I bet he gets the Boot AGAIN next election

Poll tax?

population increase out of proportion with ratepayer increase upsets the owner/tenant balance. Margaret Thatcher advocated a poll tax, somewhat controversially to offset fairness imbalances in the UK at the time. We can't rule it out entirely here if current trends continue. Hopefully most of us are ambivalent about it. $4Mil for the visitor's centre is good forward thinking in my view, but might be unpopular among those who can't focus beyond our domestic housekeeping costs - a dull business! Arts, culture and tourism is what keeps a town throbbing and eventually pushes debt down. We need patience and positivity during the hysteresis period. A rare commodity on threads, but thank heavens for the silent majority.

This XTRA $4million could have fixed the slip road at Tauriko to Toll Road its been closed for about 10 weeks now, for goodness sake, its ALLEDGED TCC and Contractor are arguing over a hole that has formed ,well being this long and free lunches and going to have a look everyday this will fix its self, yeah right. surely it does not take that long to dig it out and put some big rocks in there and stabilize it, it must cost $$$$thousands a day for trucks to stop and go at roundabout to PORT ETC,. just cause NO ONE can come to agreement and get it fixed,(BUT) hangon ,we better have another meeting over this, come on FH fix it.my thoughts only on this matter,Sunlive thankyou being No1 for News in the Bay,Thankyou,10-4 out.

....so then...(the city) we spend $4 million plus (and it will be as always..PLUS) to watch tourists wave at the "Visitor Information Centre" as they zoom by on their way to attractions they already know about and actually want to be at in a limited time frame. As they drive past, they look into the near empty building and probably think to themselves..."there's no one in that building"..."it must be the local museum"...and ratepayers will say..yes..yes it is..."thanks McCouncil...you've done it again!"

Only in Tauranga

Some time will pass, then this will blow out to about $6mil, requiring ongoing increased annual funding for TBOP with the usual TCC bail out for all the operational and maintenance costs. There may be lots of new faces on board, but the old boys club is still running the show behind the facade.
