Person freed from Te Puke Highway crash

Two cars have crashed on Te Puke Highway this morning.

UPDATED: A person initially trapped in a two car crash near Te Puke has now been freed.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Te Puke Highway just before 9am.

Fire and Emergency NZ northern communications centre shift manager Paul Radden says fire engines from Te Puke Mount Maunganui and Papamoa are at the scene.

The highway is closed and police are diverting traffic down Manoeka and Rocky Cutting roads.

Traffic are heading towards Te Puke are being sent down the TEL.

A police spokesperson says the road is likely to be closed for two hours.

"It appears one person has suffered serious injuries.

"Police and fire are both attending and the section of the road between near Poplar Lane and Manoeka Road.

"Contractors are currently doing traffic management."

Two vehicles have crashed on the Te Puke Highway on the long swamp near Poplar Lane this morning.

Emergency services are at the scene, and traffic is being diverted at the Domain road interchange. Drivers to Te Puke are warned to expect delays as the scene is cleared.
