A tourist who sustained fractures to her lower leg had to be winched from rocks near Mount Main Beach this evening.

The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter was called to Mount Maunganui's Leisure Island around 6pm.

Pilot and base manager Liam Brettkelly says the woman in her 20s was walking along the rocks when she fell and fractured her leg.

"The Port of Tauranga rescue winch was used to airlifted her to the waiting ambulance."

This was the second rescue the chopper performed.

Earlier in the evening, the helicopter was tasked to transfer a 62-year-old Whakatane man to hospital after a fall at home resulted in a serious spinal injury.

"He was initially taken to Whakatane Hospital who called for him to be transfered to Auckland's Middlemore Hospital for specialist treatment."
