Upgrades on the Tairua Wharf have been held back due to a period of bad weather.

The South Eastern ward infrastructure project started early this year and was supposed to be completed by July, however, due to weather conditions will not open to the public until August.

Infrastructure manager Bruce Hinson says throughout the winter period they will be keeping an eye on the effects that the weather will have on the project.

The infrasture involves replacing the existing concrete wharf with a new wooden one, widening and extending the boat ramp to improve launching at low tide and adding two new 30-metre floating pontoons.

The Ferry service between Pauanui and Tairua will resume on July 8 regardless of the wharfs finishing date.

An official opening for the Wharf is being planned for late September.

The Thames and Coromandel Council also have plans to stabilise possible future slippage issues on Onemana Drive.

'The ‘Tasman Tempest' of March caused a landslip on a hilly reserve and we've been working towards stabilising slips there. Materials needed, including geo-stabilising mesh, steel debris fence barriers and steel rope nets, are coming from Swiss company Geobrugg, and are arriving earlier than we expected, which means work can start sooner.”

Due to this they expect the construction work to begin mid-July, instead of the beginning of August.

"Regular inspections of the exposed ground in the reserve area will be carried out to mitigate any further damage to the existing ground in and around the reserve area.”

Consultation with the adjacent property owners will be completed after the soft landscaping work starts.

"Once the slip remediation work has been completed, the area will be planted with suitable soft landscaping to visually mitigate the remediation structure.”
