Winston says he has the Bay's back

With just 10 weeks until the general elections, Winston Peters says his party has struck a chord once again with the Bay.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters gave a speech to the members of the public at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club this afternoon, as part of their tour of the country's regions.

He says he has seen first-hand the neglect from the national government and lashed out at their offer of a $230 million interest-free loan for new infrastructure in Tauranga.

'The monumental mess National has made in Auckland has spilled over into Tauranga. There are major infrastructure problems here.

'National has pulled the $230 million interest-free loan out of their box of tricks. It looks as though your council will be lumbered with a massive debt as a result. All because of the Auckland disaster."

He also went through the achievements the party as made, such as the construction of the two toll free bridges, the scheme, which increased capital investment in Tauranga schools by 28 per cent, and their stance to write off the $93 million debt in the local Kiwifruit industry.

"New Zealand First is proud of our long association with Tauranga and what we have achieved here.”

He says the Bay wants a change and he promises the party will help out the city once again, starting with the local infrastructure.

'You have to ask yourselves here why there are three toll roads in New Zealand and you have two of them.”

"There are no toll roads in Christchurch, no toll road in Wellington. The toll road in Auckland is when you get out of Auckland. So why have you been lumbered with toll roads and the rest of the country has not? There are no tolls on the Waterview tunnel in Auckland just opened or the new Kapiti expressway.”

'New Zealand First's record, or more particularly my record, was to arrive in Tauranga when there was no harbour bridge and to see two built before I left, both toll free.”

'I gave you the second harbour bridge, politically speaking, even after you didn't vote for me. In short, I kept my promise when I didn't have to.”

He says right now the public is being given a choice to either continue on the same road, ignore the issues at hand or do something about it.

'We alone believe in one law for all, and we have always stood for it. New Zealand First's time is here.”

Toll free bridge???

Hang on a minute. I've lived in Tauranga for 42 years. I was one of the people who walked over that bridge when it was built. It was tolled for years and years. It also paid for itself several times over. I remember queueing in the car waiting for the gates to open at midnight on a Friday and Saturday night. Only between midnight and 6am was it free!! I think it was tolled for about 20 years. Surely Winston would remember that.

Winston and the Central Corrodor

Winston also spoke of the broken promise in regards the 15th Ave Central Corridor, made by JOhn Key 4 Nov 2008, to be completed by Nov 2013. If in a position to influence outcomes the promise, while long overdue, will be honoured.

and other 2, Broken promises, Simple does not care about us, he is always available for photo shoots on his bike,he would have taken his bike out there for photo in his SUV, WINSTON got us the free bridge, and he was not invited to opening, WHY do we have a toll gate,WHEN AUCKLAND has free billion $$$ tunnel. seems UNFAIR, More people would use it and take the weight off Cameron rd ,wonder where the $62million went with by over paying the old toll bridge.my thoughts only on this,Thankyou 10-4 out,
