GM - Promoting a bright future

Students from Room 20 at Tauranga Intermediate School share their thoughts on genetic modification.

I strongly feel that genetic modification is necessary if we wish to sustain a thriving ecosystem. Trees can be genetically modified to produce larger amounts of oxygen, plants can be produced with an internal pesticide-reducing pollution. So why do people choose to go GMO-free?

I, personally, do not understand this choice. If you are worried about GMO products being harmful, medicine is tested in the same way!

It is almost like people are looking for ways to be afraid of something.

I understand where they are coming from though – it is quite scary to think that scientists can manipulate the genes of the food we consume. However, this process has been occurring naturally since farming was invented millennia ago.

So next time you are at the shop and contemplating your GMO purchase, know that that label is nothing to worry about, and that you are promoting a bright future for our ever-diminishing environmental status.
