Representatives from all over the world, including Australia, Germany, Argentina and Egypt, will take to the court in Tauranga this week for the World Junior Squash Championships.

The games were officially opened last night by Dame Susan Devoy and Mayor Greg Brownless at an opening ceremony last night.

Speaking to SunLive before the opening, organising committee chairperson Wayne Werder says it's been a couple years of work to get the championships here, so it's nice to finally be at the opening ceremony.

'It's the first time the teams have come together, so it signals the start.

'It's a lot of logistics and a lot of moving parts, but everything has been going really good.

Korea was the last team in (to arrive in Tauranga). We only had one pull out. One Mexican player who pulled out.”

Wayne says Egypt are the most dominate country, with the top four seeds in the girls being Egyptian.

He says in the men, anything could happen as the Egyptians are in the top 10 seeds.

'It's going to be quite exciting.”

The tournament's played at three venues in Tauranga, Mt Maunganui and Te Puke with an all-glass court inside the Queen Elizabeth Youth Centre the centre piece.

A stadium that can seat about 1000 spectators has been built around the court and entry is by a gold coin donation.

Entry to the other venues is free.
