Arsonist targets boarded up house

A tag left inside the empty property. Waikato Police Facebook.

A boarded up house has been completely gutted after being targeted by an arsonist.

Police says the fire service was called to 7 Shelley Court Lane in the Waikato after neighbours hear smoke alarms going on at about 5.30pm on Monday.

'The Fire Service immediately responded and put out the fire which caused major internal damage to the house.”

On their Facebook page, Waikato Police say the house is an unoccupied Housing NZ house that has been completely boarded.

'Given the house was boarded up the persons who lit the fire were lucky to escape unhurt. Police would like to prevent further arsons from occurring and it's likely those responsible have talked about it.

'We would like to hear from anyone who saw people going to or leaving this address on July 17 or from anyone who has any knowledge regarding the arson.

'The photograph shows a tag which was written inside the house and we would like to know whose tag it is.”

Any information to Detective Andrew HAWKE of the Hamilton CIB.

Housing NZ

I live in a street, opposite a Housing NZ house, that over the last 20 years has had approx 9-10 different changes of tenants, all riff-raff. Two lots were drug dealers, one lot were a gang, and the last lot turned it into a meth house. Never mowed the lawns once in 15 months. It took 4 large Waste Management trucks to take all the stuff they had left away! HNZ boarded the house up, and are now in the process of having wallboards etc stripped. After each rotten tenant, the house is painted, scrubbed, section maintenance done - for it all to start all over again with the next tenants! It would have been easier and cheaper to just burn the house down!
