Cheerleaders from around the North Island have successfully broken the world record for the largest ‘cheerleading pyramid'.

The record attempt was made at Saturday's Battle in the Bay cheerleading event, held at ASB Arena.

Bay Twisters chairperson and event organiser Rebecca Grigson says they wanted to add something extra to the event that would be fun and encourage the public to come along.

'I thought how cool would it be last year to host our own competition, so last year was our first competition, we had heaps of people come, but this year we are expecting 700 athletes from across the country.”

The cheerleading pyramid had to be a minimum of three levels high and held for at least 30 seconds.

To meet the world record requirements, the attempt had to be videoed, and the height of the pyramid measured, as well as using an approved method of timing.

Record breaking organiser Ellen Worthington says for every 50 people there will also be two stewards who will watch how the pyramid is constructed.

Councillor Bill Grainger and local MP Simon Bridges were on hand to witness the record attempt, which only required the most participants – which they achieved at 62.

As height wasn't a factor, the young cheerleaders opted for the minimal three levels, with one cheerleader on top forming the pyramid's ‘point'.
