The National Indoor Bouldering series returns to Tauranga this weekend for the first time in eight years.

The NIBS competition is made up of four rounds, with Rocktopia at Mount Maunganui securing the final round in the series of the competition starting this Saturday at 2pm.

There are two main rounds, starting at 2.30-4.30pm and 5-7pm respectively.

Bouldering is climbing without ropes and harnesses. The only gear the climber has is a chalk bag and rock climbing shoes.

Fallers hit the ground, usually onto sponge mats, but for that reason bouldering competitions are not usually held very high off the ground.

The NIBS competition is open to all ages and abilities of climbing with five grades of climbing problems. The bouldering problems start with easy for the new or beginner climber and go up to extreme for the serious athlete.

Because it is bouldering, entrants do not need a belay person to enter. The National Boulder competition is free for all spectators to come down and watch. Rocktopia also has a café from where spectators can enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the competition.

For more information call Rocktopia on 07 572 4920 or call in to 9 Triton Ave, Mount Maunganui

NZAC members $10 – Non-members $20.
