Gorge expected to re-open

State Highway Two through to the East coast via the Waioeka Gorge may re-open tonight, says the NZ Transport Agency.

The agency says people should check the website or call the 0800 number before they leave for their journey and take extra care if they decide to take an unfamiliar route.

If it is unsafe to open the road or if the situation changes the latest information will be published at www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic.

For real time information on highway conditions and incidents or to report issues on the network visit www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic, call 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49) or follow the Transport Agency on Facebook or @nztawaibop on twitter.

The slip is about 36 km from Opotiki and closed the gorge last night.

The NZ Transport Agency is asking people to delay their travel or use an alternative route such as State Highway 30 through Whakatane and Wainui Road for Waimana Gorge while the roads are closed.
