Horsing around on beaches

Horse owners who wish to ride their horses on the beach or in any other public place in the Coromandel should be aware of new rules coming into effect.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council's Activities in Public Places Bylaw comes into force on September 1, and has sections aimed at making sure animals like horses and stock don't disrupt the enjoyment of other beach users.

People can ride their horse into, on or over a public place (including beaches) if it is safe to do so and they aren't causing a nuisance to other users.

'A crowded beach in the height of summer probably isn't the best time for a canter,” says a council spokesperson.

'Share the space and remember not everyone loves your horse as much as you do, give other people room and consider using the beach when there are fewer people about.

'Make sure that you have control of your horse at all times, it won't do to have him wander off and start to eat someone's hat.

'Pick up any ‘deposits' your horse might make. Dog owners have to do it, so do you.”

Horse owners are also asked to obey the road rules – if they are taking their horse on the road to get to the beach, they will need to obey the rules of the road. This will ensure your and your horse's safety as well as that of other road users.

'There are some reserves where horses aren't allowed, so please be on the lookout for the 'No Horses' signs.”

Instead of saddling us with more rules, why not just put signs up telling folks to take horse dung home for the garden?
