Greerton Swim Club has several new records pending approval after taking part in a recent short course swim meet last weekend.

Among them is young swimmer Caitlin Farrell who set her first record in the 100 metre 11-year-old girls' freestyle.

She finished the race in 1:04.43, beating the former record of 1:04.82 by a few milliseconds.

'I was very happy,” says Caitlin, who came second by only 13 milliseconds to a 12-year-old competitor.

She says she doesn't know quite when she started swimming, but she's been competing for four years.

'I just enjoy having fun and winning races sometimes. I want to take it further and grow and get better.”

Dad Mark Farrell couldn't be prouder, and says swimming success runs in the family.

'Her older brother Connor, 15, competes at a national level. He's broken some Bay records in the past, which have been bettered since.”

He says his daughter's achievement is 'excellent”, especially as she had just come from a full day of netball competition.

Both of the Farrell kids began swimming at BaySwim, and Mark says they're both getting good guidance from their coaches at Greerton, Tai Daniela and Riccardo Pini.

Greerton Swim Club president Michael Pugh says four regions from around the central North Island attended the Bay of Plenty Short Course Championships, which involved swimmers from Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay.

'A lot of the kids use it as a chance to qualify for the New Zealand Short Course Championships up in Auckland, which have very strict qualifying times,” says Michael.

'Greerton did pretty well. I think we've got around 13 swimmers who have qualified for nationals. We normally have a strong continent going.”

All records are awaiting approval by Swimming Bay of Plenty.
