Roads open after emergency incident

UPDATED 7.47PM: Takitimu Drive and 11th Ave are open following an emergency incident earlier this evening.

The highway, from Elizabeth Road, and 11th Ave was closed down around 6.30pm.

Callers to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says emergency services were dealing with an incident on the 11th Ave bridge that stretches across Takitimu Drive.

A police spokesperson says the roads were shut down as a "safety precaution".

Another caller says the roads are now open.

Police have not released details of the incident they were dealing with.

The incident did involve police, firefighters and St John Paramedics.

EARLIER:

Takitimu Drive and 11th Ave is closed between Mount Maunganui and Tauriko this evening.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says traffic is being stopped from turning left from Elizabeth Street.

Another caller says traffic is building up as emergency services deal with an incident in the area.

A reporter at the scene says traffic is also being stopped along 11th Ave.

"There are two police cars and a fire truck on the bridge. Something is happening, but I don't know what."

A police spokesperson confirmed that the highway is shut down as police deal with an emergency incident.

"Police are responding to an incident on the overbridge and traffic is being stopped as a safety measure."

Motorists are advised to avoid the scene until the highway and 11th Ave is back open.
