New crossing for Taurikura Drive

A new pedestrian crossing is being constructed on Taurikura Drive to provide safer access to the Tauranga Crossing retail site.

Work is expected to start this week and take about three weeks depending on the weather.

The completed crossing will be signalised, and located to the west of the BP Petrol Station roundabout on Taurikura Drive.

After completion a new shared footpath will be constructed to link from State Highway 36 up to the new crossing.

Tauranga Crossing opened its doors in October 2016, and has been attracting significant foot and cycle traffic to the site from The Lakes housing development nearby.

Tauranga City Council is responding to community feedback by fast-tracking the new crossing as a solution to provide safe pedestrian access.

Council staff say pedestrians are crossing under SH36, there are paths by the stream under the roundabout - and walking around past BP and crossing Taurikura Drive.

There will be some lane closures in place while construction work is completed, but visitors to Tauranga Crossing will still be able to access the site as normal during this period.

A design has been completed for a pedestrian overbridge over SH36 to provide the link from The Lakes to Tauranga Crossing. It is expected this will go to tender early 2018 with a view for construction to be undertaken mid-2018.

We would like better pedestrian crossing for the Pyes Pa shopping centre too . The crossing to enter the shopping centre doesn't have a crossing for Pyes Pa. With traffic at 60kmph it often means being caught in the middle of the road as traffic coming around the corners allows little time to get across the road. The crossing island further away nearer the bus stops has a three to four seconds to get to the centre island from cars coming around the corner into view. This island has been destroyed twice too. So a better crossing line up with the crossing ramp into the centre just installed by council or drop the speed would be great. Even better BOTH!
