Class Disruption from Chisnallwood Intermediate in Christchurch, has just earned $3000 worth of gear for their school music department.

The group was announced as winners of the nationwide primary and intermediate age music contest Rockshop Bandquest.

A Tauranga School was also recognised in the competition with Finn Hughes from, Mount Maunganui Intermediate School winning the award for best Rocking Drummer.

As well as winning Rockshop vouchers, overall winners Class Disruption will also have their winning song professionally recorded.

The four-boy line up has played together all year.

Songwriter, singer and bass player Dylan Jonkers describes their music as ‘experimental hard rock'.

'Our songs are about things like having confidence in yourself and standing up to peer pressure,” he says.

'We are all friends and we just like having a good time and communicating through music.”

The other members of Class Disruption are Sho Woodhouse (drums), Hiromu Crosado (keyboard and keytar) and Jacob Carey (guitar).

Their music teacher Judith Bell says having $3000 to spend on gear for the music department was ‘amazing and awesome'.

'I've got a lot of ideas about what the music department needs – the kids have already bought the keytar with vouchers for Rockshop they won at the Rockquest and Bandquest regional finals.”

Second place went to The Elements from Avondale Intermediate, Auckland, who won $1000 for their school music department.

The Nanas from Murrays Bay Intermediate, North Shore, took third place with a prize of $500 for their school music department.

Now in its seventh year, Rockshop Bandquest is for bands of three or more members, up to Year 8, who play a short set of covers or original songs.

This year included 12 live events this year and an online contest for bands from outlying regions. The judges for the finals were Chris Mac from Six60 and Lani Purkis from Elemeno P and Delete Delete.

Hamish Jackson from Rockshop says Bandquest is a great sponsor fit for them.

'It gets people young people involved in making music, with huge benefits to the individuals and their school environment,” he says.

'The power of music isn't just the act of learning an instrument and singing a song - it builds relationships and brings people together, it's an important act of community that needs to be valued and encouraged – all this and it's actually fun.”
