Armed police spotted in Maungatapu

One person is in police custody after an armed callout in Maungatapu.

Part of Maungatapu Road was cordoned off last night as police reported to an incident just before 10pm.

Callers to SunLive reported multiple Armed Offenders Squad officers in the area around Wikitoria Street, at the north end of the peninsula off Maungatapu Road.

Police blocked the road access in the vicinity of the marae and rugby ground.

A police spokesperson says police were called to Maungatapu Road at 9.14pm to assist a vulnerable person.

The spokesperson says the person has now been taken into custody.
