The Motu Challenge, set to take place on October 14, is making sure the kids can get involved as well.

Efforts by Blue Light Opotiki have ensured children will have a chance to be involved while adults race around a 180km course.

Three relatively short distances and a mainly off-road course utilising the Motu Dunes Trail will give children 4-15 years old a chance to run and ride just like the adults, but on a much shorter course.

Due to the nature of the course children will need a mountain bike, a helmet and running shoes.

Race Organiser Miriam Steadman from Blue Light Opotiki says she is stoked to host the event.

She says that last year's event attracted around 40 children but she hoped for many more this time.

The event will take place at Memorial Park at 9.30am on October 14, the last Saturday morning of the school holidays.

Entry will be on the day and registration opens at 9am.
