Four dead, eight injured in SH1 crash

UPDATE 5.41PM: Four people have died and eight people are injured following a collision in Taupo at the intersection of State Highway One and Tutukau Road.

Of the eight that are injured, two are in critical condition and the others are in serious condition or have moderate injuries.

The people who have been injured have been taken to either Waikato or Rotorua hospitals and police continue to investigate at the scene.

The road will be closed for a considerable time.

EARILER 4.45PM:

Diversions have been in relation to the serious crash on SH1 and Tutukau Road.

Police say this crash is serious and emergency services are likely to be at the scene for some time.

Motorists have been asked to use either SH5 or SH30 to avoid the scene or use the diversions suggested below:

Diversion for south to north is at Tirohanga Road and SH1.

Diversion for north to south is at Oruanui Road and SH1.

4.16PM:

Police and other emergency services are at the scene of a two car crash on the intersection of State Highway 1 and Tutukau Road, Oruanui, Taupo.

The incident occurred at around 3.15pm today.

There are at least three people trapped with critical injuries and a helicopter is heading to the scene.

The crash has blocked both lanes and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

Alternative routes will be put in place shortly, however there will be significant delays, so motorists are asked to postpone travel.

There are diversions in place in relation to the serious crash on SH1 and Tutukau Road that occurred around 3.15pm.
