No quick fix for Pyes Pa slip

NZTA is still looking for the solution to the Pyes Pa Slip. Photo: drone pic by NZTA before the lights were installed.es went up.

Engineers at NZ Transport Agency are still in the process of figuring out a solution to repair the slip that cut away part of State Highway 36 on August 28.

The slip is on the western side of a narrow ridge near the intersection with Oropi Road.

'The design has not yet been finalised but we have put mitigation measures in place while carrying out this work,” says NZTA Bay of Plenty transport system manager Jack Hansby.

'We have restricted traffic to a single lane, blocked off culverts and installed an asphalt bund to prevent any more water entering the site. We are working as quickly as possible to minimise inconvenience to road users.”

Traffic lights on SH36 are there for a while yet.

The site is inspected twice a day, which will increase if there is more rain.

'We'd like to ask road users to please obey the temporary traffic signals and signage at the site for safety reasons,” says Jack.

It's a complex project that has involved a lot of design and planning to determine a long term solution, says Jack.

Golly gosh,i went through there this morning, gosh all that WILL SLID AWAY if left any longer, so they check it twice a day, whipty do, i have all ready suggested through this paper how to fix it, BUT NO, ive got a BRAIN, where as who ever is in charge does not, IF THIS DOES ALL SLIP AWAY it will COST $MILLIONS to fix,for gosh sake, all it needs like i said is to close the road, get a BIG CRANE and hang a 40 foot container with a drill rig inside lower it over side and drill through and rock bolt it, its SIMPLE REALLY,but hangon, have to have meetings and free lunches to think about how to fix it,by then it will be too late, all those big rigs going past will loosen it and slid away,(STAND BY),SURELY SOMEONE WILL LISTEN,BUT,im not a engineer,Thanks No1,Sunlive,10-4 out, phew.

Wasn't there a slip at this site some years ago, exposing a water main? Was it not fixed with a long-term solution then?
