Two seriously injured in Waihi crash

Two people have been airlifted from the scene of a serious crash on State Highway 2, near Athenree Road.

A police media spokesperson says two cars were involved in the crash.

'Police received a report of vehicle collision involving two cars at around 1.40pm on Athenree Road involving two cars.

'Two people have been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries and another two people have minor injuries.

'The road is not blocked, but motorists can expect some delays.”

A reporter at the scene says traffic is currently backed up.

'Hundred cars heading northbound are stuck in a massive long cue and hardly any southbound traffic is coming towards us.”

This is terrible very dangerous turnoff, there was a nasty one there not long ago, the islands are STUPID DESIGN,also there is nothing reported about a Highway Patrol car on tow truck this morning with the front missing off it, IMMMM, keeping quiet on this eh ????? secret squirrel stuff,anyway hope people travel safe, i will take me horse Nightmare out for a walk over weekend and stay safe,Sunlive won the BEST NEWS in NZ,AWESOME AH.Thankyou,10-4 out, phew.
