Vandals deface Maketu mural

Vandals have destroyed a Maketu mural, something students from Te Kura o Maketu and Paengaroa School worked so hard on.

The shorebird mural was created for the Maketu Surf Club and Park Road reserve toilet block.

The artworks, mounted on the buildings, are colourful representations of the diversity of migratory and native shorebird life at Maketu and Newdick's Beach.

Maketu Ongatoro Wetland educator Tania Bramley says students worked so hard on the mural.

'Some lowlife vandalised the children's mural at Maketu Park, they broke some of the beaks off and pulled off six of the birds.”

Tania says three of the birds went missing in September and three more since then.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact the Maketu Ongatoro Wetland Society.

In particular, a date of the vandalism is being sought so the team can search through CCTV footage.

People with information can reach the society on Facebook here.
