Fireworks lit up the Tauranga skyline as $20,000 worth were let off at Baypark Speedway.
The annual display marks the marks the start of the speedway season for this year.
Promoter Bernie Gillon says last night was one of the biggest nights of the season.
"This year we had some amazing racing with the first round of the Burger King super saloon series, which will be televised this year on TV3's motorsport programme.”
Classes racing includes super saloons, saloons, stock cars, six-shooters and mini stocks.
