Man rescued from submerged car

Firefighters have freed a man from a submerged car following a crash near Paengaroa this evening.

Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 33, between Maniatutu Road and Allport Road, just before 8pm.

A police spokesperson says a car went off the road and into the water near the highway.

"The single male occupant of the vehicle was reportedly trapped for a time but was freed by 8.10pm with the assistance of Fire and Emergency New Zealand."

The man was assessed by St John Paramedics at that scene of the crash.

Police are investigating the cause.
