Aquinas College in ‘winning draw’

Aquinas College posted a winning draw against Reserve Grade competition leaders Whakatane United on Saturday, in a game where over 600 runs were scored in an afternoon.

Batting first, the Aquinas students set the Eastern Bay of Plenty side a very big target, after being bowled out for 311.

Tom Piddington and Fergus Lellman top scored with 75 runs apiece, with Ben Wilde doing plenty of damage with the ball, taking four bowling scalps.

The Aquinas youngsters were just one wicket away from victory, with the Eastern Bay team posting 292 for the loss of nine wickets. Pip Thickpenny continued his run of form with 97 runs while Darcy Hoskin was the best of the Aquinas bowlers returning 3/45.

Sikh Sports, playing under the Greerton Club banner, won the Indian team derby against R&A Sangha. The Sangha XI were removed for 170, with Sunil Gaur taking four wickets at a cost of 31 runs. A half-century from JP Singh led his team to a narrow two wicket victory.

Mount Maunganui moved into third place in the standings after they reached 237 for the loss of eight wickets, before sneaking home after bowling Albion Singh XI out just four runs short of victory. A gritty 98 from Jacob Logan led the way for the Tauranga Boys' College win over Greerton.

Another Western Bay match that produced a truck-full of runs was the B Grade match-up between Grasshoppers and Greerton, played on grass at the Tauranga Domain. Hoppers had first use of the wicket and set their opponents a big target reaching 239/6 in their allotted forty overs. Kamal Bains and Bob Curran both recorded half centuries. Greerton tasted defeat in spite of a century blasted by Mark Read, with the Pemberton Park based side coming up 15 runs short of victory.

Mitchell Park witnessed a one sided contest between Cadets Punjab Warriors and Mount Green. Punjab Warriors were dismissed for 244 and went on to bowl their opponents out for 78, to claim a big win.

Mount Gold win a high scoring game with Albion after reaching 239/7 and then bowling Albion out 18 runs short of their target.
