A man critically injured in a crash on SH29 earlier today has died in Tauranga hospital, say Tauranga police.

The crash happened on the Tauranga side of McLaren Falls Road when two cars collided in the up-hill lanes at about 4.30am.

Police say one of the vehicles had stopped because of engine trouble when it was struck by the other vehicle.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police investigation is still determining the details of how the man came to be injured.

Three other people suffered minor injuries.

Roads were closed for a time but reopened around 8.30-9am.
