Tauranga CBD bike hub plans revealed

A bike hub is being planned for the Taurnaga CBD.

An area dedicated to make biking easier for city commuters has been revealed in the final concept design for the new Harington Street parking building.

The design showcases the building's street frontage from Hamilton Street, with a clear view of the bicycle parking area on the ground floor.

The bike hub area will cater for around 240 people to park bicycles and will have secure shower and locker facilities.

Tauranga City Council Transportation Manager, Martin Parkes, says there is growing public appetite for the council to provide better biking facilities for city commuters.

'The Harington bike hub offers some practical solutions like secure parking, showers and gear storage to make it easier for people who want to bike to work.

'We've done a lot of consultation on transport projects this year, notably the recent cycle and transport plans. There's consistent and strong community support for improved bus and bike offerings."

In total the new building has potential to cater for end-of-trip travel needs for over 800 people across a range of transport modes.

The building will include electric charge points for cars and bikes.

It has space for people to park 550 cars (including 15 mobility parking spaces), and 53 motorbikes.

There are both uni-sex and female-only areas for the shower and locker facilities.

The building will stand seven levels above ground, with two more levels below ground.

Vehicle entry and exits are on Harington Street, preserving the Hamilton Street frontage for easy walking and biking access.

Martin says that the visible, attractive design of the bike hub will make it a much friendlier building.

'We need this facility to be as welcoming as possible for people to enjoy using it.

'Every person on a bike, e-bike, or bus frees up car parking and helps improve the city's traffic flow. It's in everyone's interests that we make it easier for more city commuters to bike or take the bus to work if they are able.”

The council voted on 15 August to approve construction of a seven storey building with two basement levels, with a total project budget of $27.14M.

The existing car park area between Harington and Hamilton Streets will close from 8 January when construction begins. The new building is due to open early 2019.

How crazy!! With the city crying out for much needed infrastructure, the fact that such an idea is being given consideration is lunacy! Showers?! .... and Uni-sex and female only toilets. Are there no real men left ? - do we have a world now where those poor creatures who don't know what they are have special privileges as do those special (or think they are) gays!
