Retail rebuttal

I was very disappointed in A Bourne of Bethlehem's letter (The Weekend Sun, November 17). This person obviously doesn't have much business knowledge or own an actual retail business or they would understand that retail comes with high costs i.e. rent/rates/insurance/wages, not to mention the amount of stock that needs to be purchased to run a shop.

I have been a retailer for the past 12 years and have a good business but I can assure you I am neither greedy nor wealthy, but earn a modest living and do the best for my customer.

I certainly don't appreciate the comments that retailers are greedy and if my pencil was any sharper I wouldn't have a business. Get real A Bourne.

...K Frank was part of the only (my) reply last week to the comments by A Bourne. Whilst that writer chooses to go offshore for major items, I also buy offshore commonly for the reasons stated in that comment. I do have thought for retailers in NZ, but for me, cost and choice are something I enjoy purchasing offshore. As for 'sharpening your pencil' I would say (I am clearly not a retailer), it would probably be very difficult to do so and make a fair profit. I get that, but it is hard to go past getting 'more bang for your buck' overseas, and with traders offering reasonable guarantees of a suitable product included in the buy price, and have vastly more choices, why wouldn't you particularly if you are on a restricted budget? ...this will further increase when Amazon is introduced to this region soon.

Buying offshore

Great idea, about as much credibility and common sense in that as the owners of Harvey Norman complainign about internet sales making their busienss in Australia harder. Meanwhile it was revealed that Mrs Harvey Norman loved to shop online. Good for the goose good for the gander!
