A number of track closures will take place on Mauao tomorrow morning while Tauranga City Council completes weed control work in part of the reserve.

The work will focus on a vine, Japanese Honeysuckle, which is one of the most invasive weeds on the mountain.

It's a climbing vine that smothers the canopy of other plants.

'The affected area is steep and difficult to access, so the most cost effective method of weed control is aerial spraying with a helicopter,” says Team Leader: Parks and Reserves, Warren Aitken.

'Unfortunately this means we need to put some closures in place for the safety of visitors.”

The closures will be on the 4WD track, the lookout track, the Motu Kauri track and the Waikorere track.

The work should take about half the day.

Visitors will still have access to the base track, and will be able to reach the summit of the mountain via the Oruahine track.
