What's On: Demolition Derby

Kia Ora Tauranga, Enjoy your day in the Bay! Two big events on today are the Demolition Derby and Christmas in the Park.

If you are wanting a bit of destruction where road rules go out the window, come along to the annual SunLive Demolition Derby at Baypark Speedway at 6.30pm to see all the action.

Our very own sales consultant Aimee-Leigh Brunsdon will be representing the Sun Media team where she swaps her ‘nana car', a 2000 Nissan March, for a battered Daihatsu Charade.

The idea of driving around a track smashing into other cars has got Aimee-Leigh quite excited and she says she is ready to win.

'I've been preparing for this my whole life. I'm late for everything so I'm usually racing people on my way to work – within the speed limit of course because I'm not a rule-breaker!

'I also draw my inspiration from Lightning McQueen,” say Aimee-Leigh.

As well as the demolition derby, other classes of racing on the night include sprint cars, super saloons, saloons, stock cars and mini stocks.

Gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 6.30pm. You can come down early and walk through the pits to meet the drivers and see the race cars, or enjoy a buffet meal in the speedway lounge.

The Kidz Zone will be open from 5pm with bouncy castles, face painters and more.

Tickets cost $50.00 for a family (two adults and three children), $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and children age 5-15 years and under 5s attend free. To buy tickets go to: www.bayparkspeedway.co.nz or buy at the gate.

If you're wanting something a bit more appropriate this time of year, there is also Christmas in the Park on today!

The Christmas event, which has a massive line up of performances, is aiming to spread more happiness and cheer through community involvement.

With just a gold coin donation or a non-perishable food item and present donation to enter, locals will be helping out several charities, including Women's refugee, Homes of Hope, Tauranga Food Bank, Sharkti and Good Neighbours.

This year there will be live performances by Avalanche City, Modern Maori quartet, the Randy Matthews band and Ruchter City Rebels.

There will also be activities, such as face painting, a carnival area, bar, Little Big Market, youth area and Santa's grotto with a photo booth.

The Tauranga Christmas in the Park event will be held from 1-8pm at Blake Park on 40 Kawaka Street, Mount Maunganui.

If these events aren't for you, here's a list of SunLive's other options:
