The second winner of a $1000 bike voucher from Tauranga City Council has decided to use her win to make a donation to a local school.

Gill Brann was randomly selected as a winner after taking part in a survey by the council on the future of cycling in the city.

'I'm passionate about getting kids on bikes, and people cycling to school and work,” she says. 'I think it's important we facilitate this, and make it as safe as possible.”

She'd like to see the Bayfair roundabout made safer for cyclists, and for more high schoolers to bike instead of taking their cars.

When she was drawn as one of the voucher winners, Gill decided she didn't really need a new bike, and instead chose to purchase some for a local school.

'When you look at our age and the toys we have, it makes sense to give it to the kids instead.”

At the moment she's working with members of the TCC Travel Safe Team to pick a school to donate the bikes to. There's two boys' bikes and a girl's bike, which together cost a little more than $1000. Gill's agreed to cover the extra costs of a third bike, while Cycle Obsession owner Kris Snow has provided a generous discount to help out.

'We're keen to donate some helmets and other bike gear when the bikes are given to the school as well,” says Kris.

'It's massively encouraging to see the growth of cycling in Tauranga. It's been slow-going until recently, but this new council is making a real push for a cycle-friendly city, which is reassuring.”

The school will receive the new bikes in time for the start of Term 1 next year.
