Coastal flooding and strong winds around the Bay of Plenty is causing havoc on the roads.

Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management duty group controller Jono Meldrum says that while some parts of the region have overcome the worse of the storm, there are parts that are still affected by the weather conditions.

'It is currently high tide so some coastal flooding may be occurring, particularly in low lying areas. We urge people to stay clear of the beaches and avoid any unnecessary travel.

Strong winds are also lingering around the region causing debris and trees to fall on roads.

"The weather isn't ideal for travel right now and we are receiving reports of incidents taking place on the roads.

"If you do need to travel, drive to the conditions and take care."
