Police are continuing to look into the cause of a crash which claimed the life of one person in Whakamarama.
A spokesperson for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust says four people were trapped in a car following a crash between a car and ute.
'Two patients were in a serious condition, while the other two were in a critical condition.
'The Whitianga crew assisted a male in his 20's in a critical condition.
'Crew continued CPR (already in progress) and performed an RSI (Rapid Sequence Intubation) to assist the patient's breathing. Unfortunately the patient died at the scene.”
Western Bay of Plenty acting road policing manager Sergeant Wayne Hunter says the crash investigation is in its initial early stages.
He says the cause of the crash hasn't been identified yet.
Anyone with information about the crash, and haven't already spoken with police, can contact Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.
Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Worst road in New Zealand?

Wow! Seriously, something MUST be done about this road. It cannot be just 'driver error', not with the frequency of fatalities. Those in a position to make changes MUST act and must act NOW.
Driver Error!!

Driver Error is an easy cop out for the officials. Yes in a very high percentage of cases it is driver error. However some roads highlight driver errors more than others, some roads make it easier for the innocent party to take evasive action, some roads were built for 1970s traffic volumes etc etc. which roads are these the ones with horrific accident statistics. And the powers that be know this.

...I don't think the article laid claim to this being the worst road in New Zealand, in fact in a recent NZ Herald report it is not listed in the top 10...so once again we need to know the 'real' facts as time goes on, rather than possibilities. The timing is interesting also and perhaps a factor (around midnight?)...however the road definately needs some work (as do us drivers) to bring it (us) up to standard, which seem to be slipping on a daily basis.I note involvement of a "Whitiaga crew".. (emergency assistance) ..long way from home guys many thanks for your help, I am guessing always much needed and appreciated volunteers?...thank you....

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this piece of road. I drive a 32 wheel monster down it quite regularly and I dont find it any different to any other piece of road. Its just another bit of road... motorist in NZ need to learn to drive to the conditions. They also need to drive courteously which Kiwis dont. People make mistakes so drive with caution.
