Cycle underpass diversion opens

City-bound traffic from Maungatapu will be taking a little extra diversion coming down the hill from the roundabout over the next month or so.

The diversion is in place until March, while a pedestrian and cycle underpass is installed to link the existing Hairini St cycle track with the underpass.

'The diversion is in place there so that we can construct the cycle underpass that comes off the road coming through the main concrete underpass, the main trench,” says NZTA project manager John McCarthy.

'Then it will go under the off ramp and meet up with the end of the existing cycle path at the end of Hairini Street.

'We've tried to plan it for when it has the least impact on traffic. We didn't want to do it over Christmas but we are also trying to get it done - at least the majority of it done, before the schools come back.

'It should be a relatively short time. By diverting the traffic they don't have to accommodate lane changes each way and everything else.”

The underpass is a pre-cast concrete underpass similar in size to the one at Bayfair.

'Once it's in, we are working with the hapū as well to look at doing some cultural artworks through there as well.”

When completed it will allow for reasonably flat and level cycle assess through from Welcome Bay to Turret Road, says John.

The $45 million underpass project is currently scheduled to be completed in April.

with Capt Kaveman, those lights from Turret Rd are stupid and held up because no cars are coming from welcome bay end, im SURE everybody has a BRAIN at these lights and would give way, this is going to be one Big hic cup when finished and will be NO DIFFERENT, at least the Mayor will have another photo op when it opens, had i been in charge i would have put a side exit half way through tunnel to the left for all cars to go towards baypark, and this would have a clear run for other traffic to go above, another bridge could have been put over the top to baypark from welcome bay instead of going around the island, HANGON you need a BRAIN for this, which NZTA does not have one, gosh its annoying when you can see what this would have done had theydonethis,Thanks.
