A man who suffered serious leg injuries in a motorcycle accident on Friday night owes his life to another motorist who called emergency services.

The motorist, Sheryl Metcalfe, says she saw lights shining some distance off State Higway 2 near the intersection with Barrett Road, as she was driving home with her partner at about 11.15pm.

She says they stopped and found the motor bike, but that it took some time to find the 23-year-old rider.

The young man had lost a leg in the accident and probably would not have survived the night unless he had been found, she says.

“We spent a long time with him keeping him ‘going’. We called emergency services and stayed on giving him encouragement to hang in there. He is one very lucky young fellow.”

The 23-year-old from Katikati is today in stable condition in the hospital’s high dependency unit.
