The Labour Party is proposing an amendment to allow the Minister of Justice to set a minimum price on alcohol.

The amendment intends to address New Zealand’s binge alcohol problem and relating harm.

However, the Government believes some people would switch to the lowest quality alcohol rather than drink any less volume.

The Government doesn’t want to commit to a decision until the ministry completes its research.

SunLive asked residents what they thought of putting a minimum price on alcohol.

its a ridiculous idea how about we make people responsible for their own actions Stop dairy and supermarket sales of alcohol and serve singles instead of doubles its crazy in NZ you have to ask for a single shouldnt we have to ask for a double?? The alcohol content in alco-pops is very high all that should be looked at but in the real world we have to make our own decisions otherwise we can go live in other parts of the world where there is no decision

Here is an idea

How about we start making people be responsible for their actions! Restaurants and bars get fined $4000 to $10000 for having or “allowing” people to become intoxicated on premises, why not hold the individual accountable if they are intoxicated in public. And while we are at it, start making the penalties for drunk driving strong enough that it actually discourages people from doing it. Seeing people on their 3rd, 4th and even 7th conviction shows the current ones are more than a little “limp wristed”. But if you are serious about upping the price/tax on something go right to the culprits-Independent Liquor and the other companies who make RTDs. That’s what’s responsible for most of the problem. You don’t see too many people getting wasted on craft beers!

Typical

This is just like Hone Harawira and his wishes to make tobacco illegal to help Maori health. It will work as well as having marijuana illegal, won’t it. Mankind has developed to where it is today by learning from experience and disasters . The best learning aid for the binge drinkers is the after effects, eventually they’ll click and change their behavior but by falsely changing their behavior by trying to price drink out of reach, they won’t get that lesson. Hence the behavior will persist. Of course, when it all fails, they could use dropping the price as an election bribe.

Why penalise normal drinkers

This is a typical ploy to penalise your average drinker who doesn’t have an alcohol problem. It’s a great example of the stupid nonsense thinking that pervades NZ. Naturally the MPs and Cabinet Ministers won’t worry because some of their alcohol bill is footed by the taxpayer. Just look at Cabinet Minister Tim Groser’s minibar bill. For goodness sake stop interfering in ordinary NZers lives. I guess fish and chips will be the next item to have a minimum price policy???
