History highlights at machine expo

A little piece of history was on show at the annual Tauranga Vintage Machinery Club Expo yesterday.

Vintage tractors including oil tractors, steam traction engines, hay balers, bulldozers and tanks from the WWI era were showcased on Sunday.

Katikati man Keith Hayman, who is a member of the New Zealand Vintage Machinery Club, has been collecting engines since 1972. He has more than 85 engines in his collection.

'I collect New Zealand made engines, engines of different designs, English diesel engines, engines that are just interesting for their own reason.”

One of the smaller engines in his collection featured at the expo.

The machine, originally made by the Ronaldson Brothers and Tippet, was fitted with a particularly historical piece of metal - the centrifugal pump.

The centrifugal pump, cleaned, painted and fixed by Keith, was used in the Te Puke dairy factory in the early 1990s for the commercial production of butter.

'It's a bit of local history. People may not know that this sort of thing existed before.”
