One person is dead after getting into trouble in the water off Pukehina Beach.

Emergency services were called to the stretch of beach of Rogers Road at about 3.12pm following reports of two people in trouble in the surf.

One person has died in Pukehina this afternoon.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Colin Underdown says the fire service, police and the St John Paramedics were attended the call.

He confirmed one person had died following unsuccessful attempts from paramedics to revive them.

The second person was rescued from the sea.
