‘Hoon’ ends with car in creek

Police working on a theory of how a car became submerged in the Kopurererua Stream at the weekend believe speed on the gravel walking track is a factor.

The 16-year-old driver of the grey hatchback, found under water at the end of Faulkner Street, has been located but is yet to be interviewed.

The grey hatchback being pulled from the stream at the end of Faulkner Street.

'Just putting it together, so far it's looking like he's just gone for a little bit of a hoon through the gravel road area through there, and that's about where we are at with it,” says Senior Constable Steve Murray.

'It kind of looks like he went out for a bit of a spin on the gravel roads in that reserve area, and was possibly going a wee bit too fast and skidded off into the drink.

'He's jolly lucky because it's pretty swift moving and very deep. The vehicle was completely underwater. He's lucky to get out without getting injured.”

When the vehicle was first seen late Sunday morning, no one had called it in and emergency services had no idea if there was anyone trapped. The car was pulled out about 2pm, and found to be empty.

Even though it is not a road in the usual sense, the driver and sole occupant is liable for infringements, says Steve.

'Under the Transport Act it does fall under the definition of a road. Even though it is council land, it's a place the public do have access to.”

Police will be speaking with the teen.

Maybe the council should have checked his tyres.
