Storm causes chaos in Bay

Trees and power lines are down, and roof tiles are lifting as the Western Bay of Plenty is hit by severe weather.

Emergency services are dealing with a large tree down on Fraser Street, outside Classic Builders.

A tree has come down, narrowly missing a car outside Classic Builders near 15th Ave.

A reporter at the scene says the tree has come down narrowly missing a ute parked in the driveway of the business. A fence was not so lucky, and has suffered damage from the fallen tree.

Police and firefighters are busy dealing with number of weather related calls in the Bay, including roof tiles lifting on a house in Hairini and a tree down through a shed.

The roof to Capes Medical on Ashley Place in Papamoa Beach is reported to have partially blown off and a roller door has blown in with the high winds hitting the Bay.

The Athenree Gorge may also be closed in the next half an hour due to severe weather.

Police are advising against all non-essential travel and if people do have to travel, police ask they drive with extreme care.

I followed a truck and trailer across Maungatapu bridge this morning. It was so windy the trailer start to move across towards the barrier. The driver did a damn good job of keeping it on the road
