Tauranga hosts BMX nationals

The speed and skill of more than 900 BMX riders from across New Zealand will be on show for Tauranga families as the city hosts the 2014 BMX National Championships this Easter weekend.

Several world ranked riders will take part in the racing at the Tauranga BMX Track on Cambridge Road, with the elite riders set to compete for the top spot on Sunday.

The national event – hosted by Tauranga BMX Club for the first time – has been compressed into two days after wet weather saw today's schedule postponed until tomorrow.

Event coordinator Jill Peck says they were forced to cancel Saturday's events and postpone Friday's events to Saturday.

'The opening ceremony and Mighty 11 trials will be on Saturday now and the national championships will be reduced to one day on Sunday.”

She says both days will make for awesome viewing for the public.

Tomorrow will see about 40 11-year-old riders vie for one of four spots in both the boys' and girls' New Zealand team.

'The Mighty 11 trials are always quite competitive. All of the 11-years-old fight out for a spot on the team of four.”

The winning riders will travel to Australia in June to race against the Australian Mighty 11s.

Racing on Sunday will be a compressed version of the original plan, but will see many elite riders fight for gold.

Tauranga BMX Club has 83 riders entered in the event, says Jill.

Elite national names to watch out for include Matt Cameron, Michael Bias, Sacha Earnest, Tony Wilcock and Lachlan Stevens-McNab.
