Bargain book hunters queue up

Bargain book hunters are scouring through the Mount Action Centre this long weekend to find a good read at the 27th Tauranga Rotary Club Easter Book Sale.

Thousands of used novels, CD's and magazines have been donated to the annual sale, with fresh donations still accumulating at the front door this morning.

Tauranga Rotary Club president and book sale organiser Ann Pritchard says by 9am there was a 150m line of keen book lovers.

'When we opened the door the queue stretched all the way down past the toll building.”

As the Mount Action Centre is a big venue for the event, the organisation could afford to accommodate other small clubs, such as the Stamp Club.

'We also have a young disabled lass selling amazing paintings this year too,” says Ann.

But the club's biggest new venture is collecting unwanted oil-filled heaters for the District Health Board.

'There are a lot of houses that aren't warm enough. They're damp, they're cold, and people are using nasty gas heaters that are creating pollution.

Ann says so far, 11 heaters had already been donated at the sale, with more heaters donated throughout the week to be stored at the DHB depot.

As the process of the book sale - collecting the donated books, sorting, categorising and pricing them - takes six weeks, help from members and volunteers is vital over the weekend.

'But our problem is we're all getting older. We needed some young people to come and do some of the hard work.

'We could do with younger members, definitely.”

All money raised will go towards literacy in schools, dental clinics, a project for mobility scooters, women's refuge and tree planting.

Ann says their major international project is the eradication of Polio from the World.

'We also put money towards shelter boxes where there has been disasters – and boy have there been some this year.”

The annual Easter book sale runs Saturday-Monday,9am-4.30pm.
